Contents Outline of history of the Greek language: grammar (seen in a historical perspective), principles of syntax and system of dialects.
Extended Syllabus -Principles of history of the Greek language: grammar (considered in a historical perspective):
• The alphabet and writing; pronunciation; historical and methodological notes; diacritical marks and punctuation; the accent and its fundamental laws;
• Elements of phonetics: the vowel system; the consonant system; the syllable; apophony; phonetic phenomena relating to the vowels and those relating to the consonants;
• Elements of morphology; the noun; nominal greek declination; the article; mixed declination; thematic declination; athematic declination; declination of participles;
• Elements of morphology: the verb; the verbal theme and the temporal theme; the verbal classes; aspect, time and mood; ‘polythematic’ verbs; diatheses and endings;
• the system of the present; the imperfect;
• the system of the future; simple or first future;

Teaching Methods The fundamental teaching method will be frontal teaching; however, translation laboratories and simulations of the mid-course and end-of-course tests will also be provided.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Written exam preparatory to the oral. The written test includes:
• the translation of a Greek text of no particular complexity (with a maximum rating of 10/10);
• the answer to 16 questions on the morphology of the noun and verb (with a maximum score of 20/20, which comes from the score of 1.25 for each correct and complete answer)
The passing of the written test with at least 18/30 is a prerequisite for the oral examination; the overall final grade will be expressed in 30/30.
Contacts/More Information The reading of the Greek texts in the original language is required and there is a written entry examination of the knowledge of the Greek language; no additional study materials are envisaged for non-attending students.
