Objectives

Knowledge of the physical principles of the techniques of dating and non-destructive microanalysis described in the program and understanding of their limits and possibilities of application.

Contents

The course of physical methodologies for cultural heritage aims to provide the basic knowledge concerning the application of advanced physical methodologies for the diagnostics of cultural heritage.

Extended Syllabus

Absolute and Relative dating techniques.
Relative dating methods.
Dating method with Carbon 14.
Methods of dating using ultrasensitive mass spectrometry (AMS).
Thermoluminescence dating: principles, techniques, fields of application.
Non-destructive microanalysis.
Quantitative XRF analysis in archaeometric applications.
The X-ray fluorescence technique in energy dispersion (EDXRF) for the study and preservation of cultural heritage.
Optical microscopy.
IR Thermography.

Teaching Methods

The course includes 36 hours of frontal teaching, divided into 2-hour lessons depending on the academic calendar. The frontal teaching is constituted by theoretical lessons and applications to current practical examples. During the lessons, the main subjects of the teaching are explained with examples on the blackboard or on the computer.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The verification of the student's competency consists of an oral test with at least 3 questions of the teacher's discretion related to the entire program. The total points (30) will be divided based on the exposure of the acquired knowledge. The duration of the oral exam is approximately 30-40 minutes.
