Objectives
Contents Study of the contemporary history of Islamic countries in the Mediterranean area, with particular reference to situations of multi-faith cohabitation.
The course will focus on the analysis of Islamic history from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the birth of national states in the Arab-Mediterranean world. Particular reference will be made to the influence of nationalisms in this area and to the relationship between the Muslim world and Europe between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Teaching Methods Teacher up front lessons; educational visits to archives, libraries and sites important to the discipline; exercises, group work, seminars with sector experts.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral exam on the programme contents. Marks are out of thirty. An oral presentation of the contents learnt is worth two-thirds of the total assessment. Subject to agreement with the teacher, an individual project (or group project if the individual contribution is assessable) is valid for the remaining third of the assessment.
