Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Palaeontology and Palaeoecology
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
No specific cultural background is needed.
Objectives
Contents The course introduces students in the field of micropaleontological studies applied to research with stratigraphic purposes (biostratigraphy and biochronology, chronostratigraphy) and/or research on paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental studies.
Extended Syllabus Features of the course are:
Basic on paleontology of Protists, with special reference to microfossils form biogenic marine calcareous sediments.
Principles of Biostratigraphy.
Hints on key microfossil groups, and their role in stratigraphic studies and reconstructions (through biostratigraphy) and in understanding major changes in past global climate;
Further study on calcareous nannofossils, through the development of a small project to obtain data on samples collected in land sections or from deep sea core sediments.

Teaching Methods In-class teaching; exercise classes and analysis at the microscope, for developing a small research project.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The examination is subdivided in 3 partial exams (oral) held during the course. The partial exams will be about the topics addressed during the teaching term preceding each test, and the partial exam #3 will deal with the small research project carried out by students.
