Objectives

Provide basic knowledge on the chemical and physical characteristics of the materials used in dentistry

Contents

Provide students with adequate knowledge on the following topics: general concepts on the science of dental materials; materials for restorative, prosthetic and orthognathodontic therapy; professional and home oral hygiene materials; materials and technologies for dental bleaching.

Extended Syllabus

Properties and biocompatibility of dental materials: material properties; properties of dental materials; biocompatibility of dental materials.
Materials for restorative therapy: dental cements; amalgam; composite resins and dentin enamel adhesives; sealants; materials for endodontic therapy.
Materials for prosthetic and orthognathodontic therapy: impression materials; dental gypsums, dental waxes, resins, alloys, ceramics; rotating instruments in dentistry; implantology material; CAD / CAM technologies.
Home oral hygiene materials: materials for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
Professional oral hygiene materials: curettes; implant-retained hygiene tools; air-polishing; sonic and ultrasonic scalers; materials for dental erosion and hypersensitivity therapy; the laser in oral hygiene.
Materials and technologies for dental bleaching: materials for professional, home and non-vital teeth whitening.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons in order to train students with a critical ability on the topics and to acquire a knowledge of dental materials useful for solving the specific professional problems of dental hygienists

Verification of learning: Oral exam in order to ascertain the quality and level of knowledge and understanding of the course contents and the ability to apply the knowledge acquired to professional practice. The judgment will also evaluate the quality of participation in the student's lessons.
