Acquisition of competences about the contents and methods of the researches in the fields of philosophy of mind, linguistics and cognitive sciences, with applications in psychology and education.
The course is devoted to the relations between Language, Thought and Physical World, on the basis of the theoretical hypotheses developed in Philosophy, Linguistics and Cognitive Sciences in XX Century. Basic problems in Philosophy of Language and Mind are considered: notion of sign, concept formation, meaning, speech act, interpretation, body-mind relation. Particular attention is given to contemporary linguistic theories, their relations to logic, psychology and artificial intelligence. A group of lessons will be devoted to the theory of truth and interpretation of the American philosopher Donald Davidson.

1) TEXTBOOK The preparation of the following book is required for basic information: C. Casadio, Strutture del Linguaggio e del Pensiero, PrimeVie Editore, Corfinio AQ, 2015. =========== Alternatively, the following volume is admitted: W. Lycan, Filosofia del Linguaggio. Un'introduzione contemporanea, Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano. =========== 2) ESSAYS Students are required to read and prepare carefully 4 essays from the collection: P. Casalegno et al. (a cura di), Filosofia del linguaggio, Raffaello Cortina, Milano; of which, mandatory: =G. Frege (Senso e significato/Meaning and Denotation) and =P. Grice (Logica e conversazione/Logic and Conversation); TWO other essays can be freely selected. =========== 3) PRESENTATIONS Students can prepare a short presentation in oral form or with power point support, connecting basic concepts from the textbook with the selected essays. The work must show both historical and theoretical knowledge of the subject. Students are invited to present their work at the end of the lessons; alternatively presentations can be given at the exams. =========== All the volumes can be found at the University Library Paratore, in Chieti Campus.
Lectures will consist in presentations supported by slides and on line or paper contents. Students will be encouraged to prepare oral and written presentations to give at the end of the course.
The final exam consists in a written proof and an oral presentation. The written proof is a multiple choice test (4 options) concerning the basic contents of the course. The oral part of the exam involves the discussion of the relevant papers and materials of the course. Students are invited to prepare a presentation organized with the teacher, concerning arguments such as: meaning, speech act, mind and body, interpretation, intentionality. The final evaluation is unique. The exam is the same for all the students, independently from their attendance.
