Prerequisites:
The course is self contained, however a basic informatics and mathematical background will be helpful.
Objectives
Contents This course prepares students for their master courses in geology by laying a solid foundation in the application of statistical principles to a broad range of geophysics and geological phenomena. Students are introduced to fundamental concepts and applications of the statistics and Matlab programming. These topics are covered with exercises and geophysical problems to be solved developing Matlab scripts.
Extended Syllabus Analysis of sequence data (Series of events, Least-Squares Methods and Regression Analysis, )
Spatial Analysis (Distributions: points, lines, spherical, Fourier measure of shape, Spatial Analysis by ANOVA, Kriging, Trend surface)
Analysis of Multivariate data (Multiple Regression, Stepwise regression, Tests of significance, Principal component analysis, Multidimensional scaling, Canonical Correlation)
Introduction to the MATLAB programming (basics commands, vectors and matrix manipulation, Reading, loading and save data in any format, loops, if statements, while and find commands)
Graphics with Matlab (histograms, scatter-plot, surf, axes rotation, data normalization, interpolation, maps)
Multivariate with Matlab (time and spatial series, regression: linear, non-linear, multiple regression, ANOVA, Principal Component Analysis).
Recommended Bibliography
Teaching Methods Fontal lectures, lab activity and classroom exercises, manual and digital. Each student will be personally involved in all phases of the program and will be stimulated to develop critical sense towards what he learns.
All lectures will be combine frontal teaching with Lab activities.
