Contents CFU1.Introduction to the concepts of seismotectonics and seismogenesis and elements of quantitative seismotectonics
CFU1. Kinematic analysis of Quaternary faults and focal mechanisms and reconstruction of the strain and stress fields.
CFU1. Use of 3D geological modeling software for the geometric and kinematic analysis of the earthquake / fault association, at various scales.
CFU1. Seismotectonics of subduction zones and of intra-plate continental regions; induced or activated seismicity.
CFU1. Geological-structural, geophysical and seismological analysis of the seismotectonic provinces and of the Italian and peri-Adriatic individual seismogenic structures.
CFU1. Construction of three-dimensional seismotectonic models, on a local scale (individual fault) or a regional scale (seismotectonic province).
Extended Syllabus 1.Introduction to the concepts of seismotectonics and seismogenesis, based on the integrated geometric, kinematic and dynamic analysis of seismological, geological-structural, geophysical and geodetic data.
2.Quantitative seismotectonics (single and multiple earthquakes; seismic sequences and aftershocks; asperity, gaps and earthquakes interactions; seismic and tectonic deformation; areal seismogenic potential of single or composites sources; b-value).
3.Fault-slip analysis and paleostress reconstruction.
4.Use of 3D geological modelling software for earthquake / fault association analysis.
5.Seismotectonics of subduction megathrusts, of strike-slip plate boundaries and spreading centres.
6.Seismotectonics of intra-plate continental regions (extensional, compressional and strike-slip regimes).
7.Induced and activated seismicity hydrocarbon fields.
8.Geological-structural, geophysical and seismological analysis of the Italian and peri-Adriatic seismotectonic provinces.
9.Seismotectonic analysis of the great Italian historical earthquakes and of the major instrumental sequences and of the associated fault.
10.Methods and exercises for the construction of three-dimensional seismotectonic models, on a local or regional scale.
Recommended Bibliography THE GEOLOGY OF EARTHQUAKES – R.S. Yeats, K. Sieh C.R. Allen, 1997, Oxford University Press.
THE MECHANICS OF EARTHQUAKE AND FAULTING – C.H. Scholz, 1990, Cambridge University Press.

Books, thematic volumes, scientific articles and websites on specific topics will be provided by the teacher during the course.
Teaching Methods Lectures and classroom exercises, with individual and group activities.
Each student will be personally involved in all phases of the program and will be stimulated to develop a critical sense of what he learns.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The students' evaluation is organized in three individual partial tests (60%) and in a group work (30%), the latter with the realization of a MOVE project and a Power Point presentation.
Regular attendance and participation in the course activities will be evaluated at 10%.
Contacts/More Information Attendance is compulsory.
Students will have the opportunity to:
1) attend the following laboratories at Ud’A:
-Lab of Seismology and Geophysics for Seismotectonics and Territory;
-Lab of Structural Geology, Cartography and Geological Modeling;
2) do internships at other universities belonging to CRUST (Interuniversity Center for 3D seismotectonics with territorial applications) or at relevant Italian Research Centres (INGV, CNR etc);
3) do their master's thesis in the context of CRUST (https://www.crust.unich.it/avvisi/tesi-magistrale-crust ).
The teacher will put all students in a position to complete the exam immediately after the end of the lessons. Partial checks will be carried out for this purpose.
