Objectives
Contents In order to achieve the expected learning outcomes, the course will deal with the following aspects:
- first module: culture and meaning; the cultural construction of identity; cultural diversity; ethnocentrism, relativism, critical ethnocentrism; field research and new developments in anthropological research; forms and models of parental relationships (basic concepts, terminology, kinship as a social and cultural practice); the history of the theoretical orientations of the discipline in the twentieth century (synthesis).
- Second module: anthropology and violence; the new wars and the ethnographic representation of violence; the cultural construction of the violent conflict; violence and body; testimonies, memory, trauma; case studies. Anthropology and the Mafia; the role of the family in criminal organizations; case studies relating to the Gargano mafia, Balkan mafia, revenge, feud; social representation of mafia e anti-mafia; role of women in criminal organizations and anti-mafia movements.
Extended Syllabus The course is divided into two parts:
the first module, of an introductory nature, will focus on the main themes and problems of cultural anthropology (Culture/cultures – Culture, identity, alterity - Cultural diversity - Race, racisms, culture, ethnicity - Cultures and kinship – Fieldwork and current research perspectives) and on the developments that the discipline has taken on in the contemporary debate in relation to its public and applied use.
The second module, of a monographic nature, will deepen some aspects through which deviance can be declined in an anthropological sense, in particular the issues related to violence in its various forms (violence and culture - violence and the body - violence and conflicts - violence , memory, trauma), the interpretation of mafia phenomena and the social construction of the concept of mafia according to an anthropological approach, the role that the female figure reviews within criminal organizations and anti-mafia movements, also through the analysis of ethnographic cases and researches relating to different areas of the contemporary world.
