Prerequisites:

The course in Architectural Composition 4 is presented as the final design exercise before the final thesis work, for which it is essential, for enrolling in the course, to have passed all the Composition and Architectural Design exams of previous years, as preparatory to the complete training of the student.
Knowledge of historical disciplines (with particular reference to contemporary history), urban planning, technological and structural knowledge are considered fundamental prerequisites for enrollment in the course.

Objectives

The course in Architectural Composition 4 is aimed at experimenting with a project on an urban scale and aims at training objectives:
1. to introduce the development techniques of the complex architectural and urban project and the multi-scale procedures and for differentiated construction phases;
2. to experiment with the relationship between architectural artefacts and critical interpretation of the shape of urban territories;
identify the criteria for the choice of technical and construction alternatives.
3. Develop a complex transformation project by dealing with infrastructural, landscape and urban issues, in particular from the territorial to the architectural scale.

Urban regeneration - public space and city
Today the contemporary city is configured with a complex stratification of many parts, many of which are still waiting for a definitive solution and with strong connotations of transformations in progress. This transformation process is increasingly carried out in the absence of architectural and environmental quality and without an urban strategy capable of cohering the proliferation of transformative interventions.
The project is entrusted with the task of re-generating these portions of the city through transformation, replacement and reconfiguration mechanisms capable of interpreting a new role for the urban context of reference and for its pertinent territory. In these processes of modification great strength is the requalification of public space, capable of generating new dynamics of re-signification of the overall quality of living and of the city.
In these spaces the project explores new work opportunities on the existing, whether it is characterized by residential settlements or by services and equipment, through the identification of an ecological rationality and a sustainable coherence. The interested design devices must therefore integrate, within them, complexities of different nature: from the compositional to the more properly technical-constructive, as a concrete response to an architectural-functional program and its decisive explanation.

THE INTERPRETATION OF PLACES

THE PROJECT AND THE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CONTEXT

THE MASTERPLAN AND THE ROLE OF THE URBAN PUBLIC SPACE
The masterplan assumes the centrality of public space and its regenerative properties
for urban and territorial contexts. Public space is understood in its multiple dimensions
interpretative and design of physical and symbolic space, cultural and political, common good,
plot and matrix of the city and territory regeneration project.

Students will organize themselves into work groups of 2-3 units

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity of the course consists of:
• ex lectures concerning the topic and its theoretical framework related to architectural and urban planning, held by the course owner.
• in-depth design related to the specific aspects of the theme, presented by some guests invited to illustrate their work and research.
• thematic workshops, in relation to the different phases of the project activity, conducted by external experts together with the tutors and the course owner (according to the schedule foreseen by the course).

The course will be articulated in different seminars, distinguished by intervention strategies, the revisions will be held by tutor together with the course owner according to the dates foreseen in the program of educational activities. The revisions will be collective and will constitute the specific teaching activity of each seminar. At the thematic workshops, collective revisions will be provided with the tutors with the teacher of the course and with the teachers invited to the workshop.

Among the various activities of the course there will also be in-depth workshops held by the tutors and by the course owner, on the construction of models; on the elaboration of three-dimensional models, on the reading of design references, on materials and on construction techniques, on the legal nature of the regulations.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Compulsory progressive checks are foreseen according to the deadlines programmed by the teaching activities (and coinciding with the thematic workshops). Students are required to deliver the required documents according to the dates foreseen. The compulsory progressive verifications are a guarantee to continue the activity within the seminars and for the acquisition of the attendance title which gives the right to take the exam within the time frame set by the course program.
The exam is intended as the last educational delivery offered by the course to the student. The exams will be carried out as scheduled.
All students who have regularly attended the workshop will be entitled to take the exam on the scheduled date.
The exam commission will be made up of all the lecturers of the course, teachers invited by the course owner, tutors and any external experts.

Contacts/More Information

The course lasts six months. The lessons, the exercises and the reviews will take place exclusively according to the calendar of the reference semester.
The exams are fixed by the calendar, of which no additional didactic activity will be carried out. Attendance at educational activities is compulsory and constitutes in itself a guarantee of admission to the achievement of the exam in the semester. Students are admitted to take the single exam with the identification of project strategies developed in groups.
