ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
A.A. 2019/2020
Prof. Michele Di Sivo
Goals and skilles to be achieved
The objective of the Environmental Design course is to learn how to approach the design of flexible buildings. The design will be related to buildings made with light dry technologies and recyclable materials During the semester the students will be encouraged to acquire cognitive and operational tools to ensure the effective coherence between the cognitive phase and the proposal phase, to learn how to use the sustainability in the design of the built environment designing almost zero energy buildings.
Program / Content
The course deals with a lot of interesting subject matters related to innovative aspects of architectural technology in the Environmental Design, such as the ones concerning the building process (design, organization and implementation phases) and the quality of building product.
The students will have a practical experience and they will learn how to design in a real environment.
In this activity the student will have to put together what he has learned in the entire course of study, both in terms of design methods and technical tools. The environmentas problems will be the main theme of the courseThe Course in Environmental Design will focus on the design of a building, on which different design variants (technological and functional) will be possible.
The work about the topic previosly mentioned will start from the first class, simultaneously with general lessons concerned with the aspects of the technological and functional "flexibility".
Design theme
The aim of the design proposed in the course will be to lead the students to design a building made with light dry technologies and flexible spaces with the related plant design and characterized by a high architectural quality.
During the course, the student will deal with the needs and environmental requirements related to the design and they have to best interpret the guidelines aimed at creating innovative environments.
The following guidelines are provided for the final course exercise:
- to easily allow the setting up of diversified and functional settings for differentiated activities;
- environmental, energy and economic sustainability: rapid design, recyclability of components and basic materials, high energy performance, use of renewable sources, ease of maintenance;
- presence of accessible green spaces that support the care of people and the habitability of the place;
- relationship between the design solution and the natural environment with the landscape. In particular, green spaces and the natural environment must be easily accessible from the habitable spaces creating in this way a real extension of the living environment;
- involvement of stakeholders and their active participation;
- flexibility of spaces, usability of all environments;
- attractive spaces;
- design of the spaces degli spazi in the perspective of individual well-being and sociality, also through the provision of social and informal areas in which the community can meet and participate in activities that are internal or open to the territory.
By the end of the course the students will be able:
- to understand identifying the environmental strategies and which are more appropriate for the main building types;
- to understand the main theories about the spatial and technological flexibility.
- to creatively use light dry structural systems to design a building in an innovative way.
- to use innovative building materials and to integrate the facilities in buildings.
- to apply design strategies to improve: lighting engineering comfort, passive solar gains, air quality, natural ventilation, thermal insulation using also facades and green roofs and rainwater recovery;
- to use fourth-generation software applications.

Teaching methods
During the whole course, the course will alternate lessons and exercises, having as theme the application to simple concrete cases connected with notions gradually acquired.
Since the issue of flexibility, in its various aspects, is the main theme of this course, it would be appropriate, for those who are not familiar with the topic, to study the issue through a bibliography which, starting from some general texts, will be then independently oriented to the specific theme.
Learning assessment procedures
There will be a final test, which will be an individual interview aimed at ascertaining the knowledge and understanding of the texts of the course bibliography by the student and to evaluate the papers produced during the design exercise. The final grade will depend on the knowledge of the topics concerning the course, on the critical understanding of the bibliography, as well as on the ability to expose correctly, concisely and effectively the topics of the design exercise.
Teaching tools
Lectures using multimedia tools, integration of individual communications with specific references and additional documents. The slides used to support the main lessons will be available on the university's website.
