Eastern Europe and the contemporary world.
The course examines the main events in Eastern Europe from the 20th century to the present day: the dissolution of the great multinational and dynastic empires at the end of the First world war; the achievement of a fragile independence by a series of new states claiming legitimization on the basis of the principle of nationality and right to self-determination; the attempts at expansion by Nazi Germany and fascist Italy; the
establishment of communist regimes under the pressure from the USSR and their forty year experience until the turning point of 1989-91: the post-communist transition and the new settlement determined by the break-up of Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the USSR.
The further study module focuses on the new critical scenarios disclosed by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
