MATERIALS AND DESIGN OF BUILDING ELEMENTS 2020-2021
Contents
The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge relevant to the use and characteristics of materials in architecture. The acquisition of such knowledge involves in-depth studies on the role of materials as functional layers in the construction of constructive elements.
The lessons are divided into two phases, the first theoretical and the second of practical application.
The theoretical phase involves lectures on the characteristics of traditional and innovative materials used in architecture. The concepts related to the systemic conception in the decomposition of the building organism and to the demand-performance approach in the development of the project will also be explained. These concepts will be tested in the practical application phase through the systemic decomposition, the performance analysis and the reading of constructive elements given or to be designed. Specifically, there is a series of lessons that relate to:
1. The characteristics of the materials and their use in architecture
to. Natural stone materials (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
b. Bricks (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
c. Raw earth (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
d. Concrete (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
is. Wood (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
f. Steel (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
g. Glass (with examples of traditional and contemporary / innovative architecture)
h. New generation materials.
The practical application involves both the study of constructive elements through the systemic decomposition and the demand-performance analysis and the design of one or more construction elements.

Targets
The main objective of the course is to provide the student with an adequate knowledge of the materials and their possibilities of use in architecture. In particular, the student must acquire a sufficient knowledge of the relationships between materials, performance characteristics, structural types and morphological and dimensional characteristics in the architectural project, also with specific reference to the impacts that the use of a material can generate on the environment throughout the building process.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons
Guided practical experimentation
To take the final exam, students are required to take part in the course activities and carry out the proposed exercises.
Verification method
Final examination with examination interview aimed at ascertaining the knowledge of the topics covered in the cycle of lessons and the ability to hold a discussion on one's own paper also in relation to the main topics of the course.
