Prerequisites:

The Architectural Composition 3 course looks like an exercise
at the architectural / urban scale for which it is
it is essential, to enroll in the course, to have taken all the exams
of the Composition and Architectural Design of previous years,
as preparatory to the complete training of the student.
The fundamental prerequisites for enrolling in the course are considered
knowledge of historical disciplines (with particular reference to
contemporary history), of urban, technological and structural ones.

Objectives

The goals of the course of Architectural Design 3 are:
- acquire the tools for the analysis of a territorial context also in relation to infrastructural networks to identify the themes for the transformation and the conditions for the insertion of architectural artefacts;
- to experiment the path of defining an architectural-functional program for an architectural project in its technical and formal characteristics and in its relations with public spaces; - to acquire the ability to give coherent form to the architectural-functional program for a building for public use, as well as the ability to control the scales of the project, in particular from the urban scale to that of the executive detail.

Contents

the program of the Architectural Composition 3 course for the academic year 2020/2021 will address the themes of "designing public buildings for the smaller centers of the internal areas". These are territories where the relationship between the artifice of human settlements and the nature of the landscape that contains them is still in balance and which, in the last fifty years, contrasts with the large metropolitan concentrations and the linear development of coastal transformations. .
The course will be divided into two parts, in the first part the students will study the configuration of a small center (among those chosen as a case study), interpreting its problems and new development opportunities; in the second part instead a project will be developed for the construction of a public building used (preferably) to satisfy needs related to the well-being and health of residents.

Extended Syllabus

the program of the Architectural Composition 3 course for the academic year 2020/2021 will address the themes of the design of "public buildings for the smaller centers of the internal areas".
The course will be divided into two parts, in the first part the students will study the configuration of a small center (among those chosen as a case study), interpreting its problems and new development opportunities; in the second part instead a project will be developed for the construction of a public building used (preferably) to satisfy needs related to the well-being and health of residents.
In the first part of the analysis of the reference contexts and the assigned case studies, specific lessons will be organized on the themes and contexts with the aid of reference maps and inspections in the areas subject to interventions. In this phase, some experts in the study topics will also be asked to give their contribution, together with the participation of local administrators interested in the transformations to concretely simulate the requests of a probable client.
In the second part, however, the course will be divided into the forms of the design laboratory with the programming of three specific workshops (one for each month) alternating with the presentation of projects carried out and (as far as possible) illustrated by the designers themselves who were guests of the course.

in the first phase of reading and analysis the program unchanged will be focused:
• The time and the adaptive capacity of the project linked to the continuous transformations of a future still uncertain to imagine.
• New digital technologies and the increasingly extensive processing of data and information.
• The ecology of the territory and the ongoing climate changes and the urgency of new forms of sustainable development.
• Change of paradigm, inversion of gaze, try to restore new value to the existing.

in the second design phase the architectural invariants will be studied in greater depth
• the urban interface the space that becomes the new distribution hub for the intervention area.
• grafting as an element of new construction, the result of adapting the existing one, or the demolition and reconstruction of a new building.
• the mask or the new envelope of the buildings to be recovered, also with the possibility of adapting the technologies of the systems and the new functional equipment to the new program.
• the pertinent land around which entrances, driveways, ramps, parking lots, green arrangements are arranged, imagined not as a part extraneous to the building but as an extension / expansion of its spaces to the urban public share.
• the restitution of meaning, for those architectures which still maintain the character of permanence and memory of places, but which are no longer in tune with contemporary uses and transformations.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity of the course consists of:
• ex-chair lectures regarding the topic and its framework
theorist relating to architectural design, held by
course owner.
• project insights related to specific aspects of the theme,
presented by some guests invited to illustrate their work and
own research.
• thematic workshops, in relation to the different phases of the design activity,
conducted by external experts together with tutors and the course owner
(according to the schedule of the course).
The course will be divided into different seminars, distinguished by strategies
intervention, the reviews will be held by tutors together with the owner of the
course according to the dates provided in the program of educational activities. The
reviews will be collective and will constitute the specific teaching activity of
every seminar. In correspondence with the thematic workshops, they will be
collective reviews with tutors with the course teacher and with i
teachers invited to the workshop.
Among the various activities of the course there are also workshops
in-depth study held by the tutors and the course owner, on
making models; on the development of three-dimensional models,
on the reading of design references, materials and techniques
constructive, on the legal nature of the regulations.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Progressive mandatory checks are foreseen according to deadlines
scheduled by didactic activities (and coinciding with the workshops
thematic). Students are required to submit the required documents
according to the scheduled dates. The compulsory progressive checks
constitute a guarantee to continue the activity within the seminars and
for the acquisition of the attendance qualification that gives the right to support
the exam within the time schedule specified in the course program.
The exam is intended as the last didactic delivery offered by
Course to the student. The exams will be held as scheduled.
All students who have regularly attended the workshop
will be entitled to take the exam on the fixed date.
The examination commission will be made up of all the teachers of the course, from
teachers invited by the course owner, tutors and any experts
external.

Contacts/More Information

The course lasts six months. The lessons, the tutorials and the reviews
will take place exclusively according to the calendar of the semester of
reference.
The exams are fixed by the calendar, beyond which it will not be
carried out any additional didactic activity. Attendance to activities
teaching is compulsory and constitutes in itself a guarantee of admission to the
taking the exam within the semester. Students are
admitted to take the exam in single form with the identification of
project strategies developed in groups.
