Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Physics for Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
The course is self contained, however an adequate mathematical and physical background will be helpful.
Objectives
Contents This course prepares students for their master courses in geology by laying a solid foundation in the application of physical, chemical, and mathematical principles to a broad range of geophysics and geological phenomena. Students are introduced to fundamental concepts and applications of the physics to the earth system. These topics are covered broadly but in enough depth to introduce students to the methods used to describe and predict geophysical phenomena
Extended Syllabus Heat Transfer and Rheology (Fourier’s Law of Heat Conduction, Earth’s Surface Heat Flux, Thermal Stress, Frictional Heating on Faults, Techniques for the measurements of the rock thermal conductivity, Laboratory experiment using the Transient Divider Bar to measure thermal conductivity of sample rocks.
Soil gas flux (Geochemical analyses of surface and shallow gas flux, Geochemistry of soil gas across active fault zones, Volcanic degassing, soil and near surface gas monitoring,...)
Forecast modelling using machine learning

Teaching Methods Fontal lectures, lab activity and classroom exercises, manual and digital. Each student will be personally involved in all phases of the program and will be stimulated to develop critical sense towards what he learns.
All lectures will combine frontal teaching with Lab activities.
