Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Hours of classroom activity:
Objectives
Contents The course will illustrate the main theoretical concepts and applications of the 2- and 3-D seismic interpretation finalised to the stratigraphic and structural characterization of sedimentary basins for fluid exploration, production and storage
Extended Syllabus a) Introduction to the seismic reflection profile interpretation (*): seismic interpretation and applications; the nature of reflections; acoustic impedance; interference; vertical and horizontal seismic resolution.
b) Methods of acquisition and processing of the seismic data (*):
onshore and offshore acquisition; stacking and migration;
c) The artifacts and pitfalls in seismic interpretation(*): multiple reflections; diffractions, distortions induced by vertical and horizontal variations in seismic velocities; signal/noise ratio;
d) Characteristics of the seismic signals (amplitude, polarity; continuity; spacing and frequency of reflections; interval velocity); introduction to the seismic stratigraphy and geomorphology (seismic facies, reflection terminations; unconformities; reflection configurations), correlation between signals and lithology;
e) Data preparation for seismic interpretation (*°): location maps; types of seismic data; section labels; NMO velocities; well data (check-shot velocity and vel profiles);
f) 2- and 3D seismic interpretation (°): well-to-seismic tie; picking and auto-picking methods; line drawing; pitfall in the interpretation;
g) Geological, Structural and stratigraphic interpretation of seismic data (°): examples of seismic interpretation of 2- and 3D data in key-areas; seismic stratigraphy and geomorphology; basin analysis for reservoir characterization and fluid storage; DHI;
h) Contouring e mapping (°): methods of contouring, gridding and mapping of geological/structural features; software application; iso-velocity maps; isochron and isochore maps; Structural maps; 3D rendering
i) Time-depth conversion (°)
l) Seismic attributes (°): types, extraction, interpretation and their application.

Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Elaboration of a project, also in work-group, of seismic interpretation derived from the lab exercises (A grade: max10/30); oral test (B grade - max 20/30). Finale grade (max 30/30) = A grade(max10/30)+B grade (max 20/30)
