We recommend a knowledge of the notions of mathematics present in all high school programs.

Objectives

The aim of the Physics module is to enable the student to acquire the basic scientific and physical knowledge of geometric optics, the fundamental properties of light and the main optical instruments. The student, after understanding the principles, will be able to apply them on examples and understand the effect. The student will be able to understand what happens in reality with independent judgment.
The Computer Science module is conceived as a general introduction to information technology and to encourage the development of a culture and an IT education for correct and responsible use of technological tools.
While the Medical Statistics module proposes to make the student acquire the ability to statistically analyze the main phenomena of Biomedical Sciences acquiring the knowledge of the basic principles of Biostatistics and the ability to use the main techniques and tools for data analysis.

MEDICAL STATISTICS
Purposes and methods of statistical analysis; Statistical characters and classification.
Data synthesis Tools: absolute, relative, cumulated frequencies; Arrangement and organization of data in tables; Frequency distributions.
Main graphical representations: orthograms, circular field diagrams, histograms, frequency polygons, scatter diagrams.
Central trend indices: Arithmetic mean and its properties, mode and median, Terzili, quartiles and percentiles.
Variability indices: range, deviance, variance, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. Box-Plot.
Frequency distribution curves. Symmetry indices.
Normal distribution, standardized normal distribution.
Confidence interval for an arithmetic mean and for a proportion.
Concept of statistical hypothesis testing.
Relationship between two qualitative characters: the Chi-squared test as a measure of association between two qualitative variables, the chi-squared with the correction of Yates for the continuity, the exact Fisher test.
Student T-test for independent samples and student T-test for paired samples.
Relationship between two quantitative characters: regression analysis and correlation analysis
Critical reading of articles related to topics related to the CdS with significant content of biostatistics.

Teaching Methods

The courses include 20 hours of lectures for each of the teaching modules divided into 2-3 hour lessons depending on the academic calendar. The frontal lectures consist of theoretical lectures, practical applications with exercises and also laboratory activities for the Informatics module. During the lessons the topics of the course are explained also with examples on the blackboard or on a computer.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The verification of the student's competency consists of a written test with a resolution of 3 exercises related to the entire program with a possible subsequent oral integration based on the teacher's discretion for the Physics module. While the modules of Statistica Medica e Informatica provide a written test with a multiple choice questionnaire related to the entire program with a possible subsequent oral integration based on the teacher's discretion. The total points (30) for each module will be divided based on the questions present in the test. The total score for each module is given by the sum of the correct scores in response to individual exercises or individual test questions. The scores obtained in the 3 individual tests related to each module are averaged (arithmetic average) to obtain the final grade of the exam. The duration of the individual written tests of each module varies between approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
