Basic knowledge of Roman history (at high school level).
There are no propaedeutic constraints.
Objectives
Contents Roman law in Europe; Roman foundations of European law; Fundamental partitions and categories; The institutional system of private law (law of persons, property, succession, obligations, procedure). Roman private law: personae (persons and family), res (property and rights in rem, succession, obligations and contracts) and actiones (Roman civil procedure); in addition, some in-depth studies on obligations with particular reference to private liability and diligence criteria and on the Roman law of immigration..
Extended Syllabus Roman law in Europe and the Western Roman tradition; The history of Roman law; The sources of law (leges, plebiscita, senatus consulta, magistrates’ edicts, constitutiones principum, responsa prudentium); Ius civile-ius naturale-ius gentium; Public and private law; The late imperial codes and the Corpus iuris civilis; The Gaian institutional tripartition; The law of persons: liberty, citizenship, slavery, foreigners, immigrants, the Roman family, patria potestas, marriage; Things and their classification; Property and possession; Ways of acquiring property; Iura in re aliena (servitude, usufruct, emphyteusis, surface, pledge and mortgage); Inheritance law; Donations; Law of obligations (constituent elements and sources of obligatio); Classification of obligations; Aquilian liability and liability for non-performance; dolus and culpa; The criterion of diligence; The Roman civil procedure: legis actiones, formulae, cognitiones extra ordinem.

Methods of Provision
Teaching Methods Frontal lectures. In addition, cycles of seminars and workshops on sources and bibliography.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral examination. The final grade (expressed in thirtieths) ranges from 1 to 30 cum laude, as follows: 1-17 insufficient; 18-21 sufficient; 22-24 fair; 25-27 good; 28-29 very good; 30-30 cum laude excellent.
The following evaluation criteria will be taken into account to assign the final grade: knowledge and understanding of the notions and principles of the matter (60%); appropriate use of the technical and legal vocabulary (10%); ability to analyze and evaluate relevant sources and acquisition of the study method (30%).
