ELECTIVE TEACHING ACTIVITIES (SECOND YEAR, FIRST SEMESTER) Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
General Microbiology knowledge.
Objectives
Contents "Water Microbiology: laboratory techniques, current regulations and waterborne infectious diseases."
Quality water, free of biological and chemical contaminants, is essential for public health. Although there are standardized procedures for drinking water disinfection and wastewater treatment, water quality is sometimes compromised thus causing the spread of dangerous if not deadly infectious diseases. This Elective Educational Activity (ADE) examines standard methods for water monitoring and treatment, as well as the causes of some common waterborne infectious diseases.
Extended Syllabus • Introduction to the different types of water and definitions
• References to relevant regulations (Legislative Decree No. 31/2001) and Directive 98/83/EC
• Microbiology of wastewater and purification:
o Public health and water quality: indicator microorganisms - Coliforms (analysis for fecal coliforms and E. coli)
o Wastewater and sewage treatment.
o Drinking water purification and disinfection.
• Infectious diseases of water origin:
o Sources of infection
o Biology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of:
• Cholera (Vibrio cholerae)
• Giardiasis (Giardia intestinalis) and cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium parvum)
• Legionellosis (Legionella pneumophila)
• Typhoid fever (Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi)
o Or other waterborne diseases:
• Viral infections (enteroviruses: poliovirus, norovirus, hepatitis A virus; Sars-Cov-2)
• Amoebiasis (Entamoeba histolytica)
• Microbiological control of water: pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases
• Standard analytical methods (plate counts, filtration systems, Most Probable Number- MPN)

Teaching Methods The theoretical knowledge will be acquired through the attendance to the lessons, closely integrated with the study of the texts adopted and the material provided by the teacher.
Practical knowledge will be acquired through attendance and active participation in teaching laboratories useful for:
• the acquisition of applied microbiology concepts related to analytical, culture and molecular techniques for qualitative/quantitative detection of bacteria and viruses in water samples of different quality.
• the interpretation of the results obtained, identification of any critical points and possible corrective actions.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral exam
The ADE examination will be held at the end of the Course in a single examination session as per the didactic regulations.
