Objectives

To acquire knowledge of the main methods and diagnostic techniques utilized in the immunohematology laboratory. Acquisition of general notions of transfusion medicine focusing on blood bank organization and activities.

Contents

Theory and practice of the most common immunhematology techniques with notions of transfusion medicine. In more detail, The organization and activities of a blood bank will be illustrated. Knowledge of indication to blood transfusion and transfusion-related risks will be provided.

Extended Syllabus

Red blood cell membrane structure and antigens. The ABO system, the Rh system and the other main blood groups. The genetics of blood groups. ABO and Rh typing. Transfusion relevance of blood groups. Red blood cell alloimmunization. Detection of anti-erythrocyte antibodies. Compatibility tests. Acute and delayed hemolytic reactions. Autoimmune hemolytic disease. Blood components: preparation, storage, quality check. Main transfusion reactions. Transfusion during pregnancy. Newborn hemolytic disease. Platelet antigens and their significance in transfusion medicine. Idiopatic thrombocytopenia. Alloimmune newborn thrombocytopenia. Post-transfusion purpura.Organization and validation of a blood bank

Frontal lessons with audiovideo support

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Interactive lessons with frequent questions to students on the topics covered during the current and previous lessons. The exam includes an oral test during which the knowledge of the topics, the property of language and the ability to analyze the candidates are assessed. The vote is expressed in thirtieths with the possible award of honors. The mark from 18 to 21 indicates just enough learning, from 22 to 24 a fairly good learning, from 25 to 27 a good learning and from 28 to 30 an excellent learning. The mark "with honors" indicates particular critical analysis skills of the course topics.
