Detailed knowledge of geomorphology and geological survey.
Objectives
Contents Geomorphology in land management. History of geomorphological cartography. Types of geomorphological maps. Base map and derived maps. Mapping of geomorphological processes and landforms. The geomorphological legends for small-scale and large-scale maps. Geomorphological survey as the basis for applied geomorphological maps. Realization of geomorphological cross sections. Principles of photogeology. Criteria and techniques for the interpretation of remote sensing images (satellite images and aerial photos). Recognition and interpretation by means of aerial photographs of erosion and accumulation landforms originating from different morphogenetic processes. Digital methods and tools for the realization of geomorphological maps. Regulations and areas of application of the geomorphological mapping. Geomorphological surveying and mapping in Italy, Europe and worldwide.
Extended Syllabus Geomorphology in land management; problems related to the different geomorphological environments (fluvial, slope, glacial, karst, coastal) and to the tectonically active areas. History of geomorphological mapping, from the first geomorphological maps to digital geomorphological maps. Types of geomorphological maps, classical geomorphological maps, applied geomorphological maps, areal ful coverage geomorphological maps. Basic maps and derivate maps; maps of specific geomorphological elements (e.g. inventory maps of landslides, maps of erosive processes in slope or coastal environment); geomorphological hazard maps.
Main legislation and regulations concerning the use of geomorphological survey and mapping.
Comparison and discussion of geomorphological mapping methods in Italy, Europe and worldwide.
Cartography of geomorphological processes and landforms. The geomorphological legends for small-scale and large-scale maps; types of legends and related symbologies, official legends, legends for scientific cartography, legends applied cartography.
Geomorphological survey as the basis for applied mapping. Construction of geomorphological cross sections. Project and realization of a geomorphological map and of the related explanatory report.
Laboratory exercises. Principles of photogeology. Criteria and techniques for the interpretation of remote sensing images (satellite images and aerial photos). Recognition and interpretation by means of aerial photographs of forms of erosion and accumulation originating from different morphogenetic processes.
Digital methods and tools for the realization of geomorphological maps. Commercial and open-source GIS software. Basic elements for the digitization of geomorphological elements and for the creation of the associated database. Basic elements for creating a cartographic layout.
Field exercises. Organization and preparation of the field geomorphological work. Identification and mapping of bedrock and surface deposits in a geomorphological map. Methods for the identification of landforms in the field through field trip in areas characterized by different morphogenetic processes (fluvial, slope, glacial, karst, coastal) and in tectonically active areas. Final field camp for the realization of a geomorphological map and of the related explanatory report.

Methods of Provision
Teaching Methods Frontal lessons, field trip and exercises and field camp for the realization of large-scale geomorphological maps. Laboratory and computer lab exercises for GIS mapping
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.
Oral exam: It will verify the knowledge of criteria, tools and methods of geomorphological mapping also according to national and international guidelines. The achievement skills in setting and carrying out a geomorphological survey and in the elaboration of the geomorphological mapping will also be verified.
Written test: Written essay and geomorphological map realized during the filed camp. Geomorphological reports and maps produced during daily field trip. All the geomorphological elements surveyed during the field activities must be mapped and described according to the appropriate legends and methodology acquired during the course, demonstrating the ability of applying knowledge and understanding.
The vote is expressed in thirtieths. The oral exam is worth 40% of the exam and the written exam is 60%.
Contacts/More Information Three field trip and exercises will be organized and a field camp.
Reception of students at the teaching office according to the scheduled times (or by appointment via email).
