Objectives
Contents The course will illustrate the geological issues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fluids exploration/storage in subsurface (e.g., gas, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, compressed air) and carbon dioxide capture and utilisation
Extended Syllabus Introduction to Decarbonisation Geology in the context of the Energy transition and Carbon neutrality;
The physical and chemical properties of fluids in subsurface; natural reservoir characteristics and the subsurface environment (water, temperature, pressure);
Introduction to the Petroleum system: source rocks, reservoir, seal;
Methods of exploration and study of fluid reservoir: geological, stratigraphic and geophysical data from well logs and cores, seismic reflection data interpretation, grav/mag data, and other geophysical methods applied to subsurface exploration;
Well-log interpretation and analysis;
Reservoir: characteristics, types, classification and evaluation; Porosity, permeability and Saturation;
Clastic and Carbonate reservois; fractured reservoir;
Traps: definitions, styles, configurations and natural examples; natural and artificial salt caverns;
Seal-rocks: characteristics, types, classification, and evaluation; fault-seal analysis
Exploration, reconstruction and analysis of prospect/depleted HC fields ((seismic interpretation, structural maps, formation evaluation);
Storage capacity estimation in deep saline aquifer or depleted HC reservoir;
Enhanced Oil Recovery methods with use of CO2
Potential risks of fluids in geological storage sites, their mitigation and monitoring;
Case-histories of CCS, CCUS and other fluid storage sites

Teaching Methods Frontal lessons in classroom and teaching labs
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Project of exploration and study of a reservoir derived from the lab exercises (A grade: max10/30); oral test (B grade - max 20/30). Finale grade (max 30/30) = A grade(max10/30)+B grade (max 20/30)
