Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of geomorphology and geological survey.

Objectives

Knowledge of the methods and tools of Geomorphology for a correct management of the main environmental and planning issues. Knowledge of the principles of the geomorphological survey and of the cartographic mapping of the landforms. Ability to identify the landforms and geomorphological units of the landscape through field analysis and observations. Ability to draw up geomorphological and geothematic maps. Knowledge and ability to use GIS software for the maps production and creation of geomorphological databases.

Contents

Concepts of marine and continental geomorphology; Landscape evolution; Morphodynamics of continental, marine and transitional environments; Principles and methods for geomorphological mapping; Application of research for territorial planning and sustainable management; Knowledge of the main geomorphological hazards, and related risks, connected to different types of geomorphological environments; Geodiversity, geosites, geomorphosites and geotourism; Examples of studies and applications of Quaternary geomorphology.

Extended Syllabus

Introduction and concepts on marine and continental geomorphology and geology.
Methods of reading and interpreting the landscape from a geomorphological point of view.
Analysis of geomorphological processes with particular attention to their influence in the morphodynamic processes of marine, continental, and transition environments.
Geomorphology in land management; problems related to different geomorphological environments (river, slope, glacial, karst, coastal, and marine)
Cartography of geomorphological processes and landforms. The geomorphological legends for large- to small-scale maps; illustration of the types of legends and related symbologies. Geomorphological surveying as a basis for applied cartography. Construction of geomorphological sections. Building of geomorphological maps and explanatory reports.
Definition and understanding of geomorphological processes and hazards to support spatial and urban planning and mitigation of related risks.
Geodiversity and the need to know, protect and enhance the geological/geomorphological heritage.
Presentation of case studies.

Frontal lessons and field trip with the realization of large-scale geomorphological maps.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test.
Oral exam: It will verify the knowledge of criteria, tools and methods of geomorphological mapping also according to national and international guidelines. The achievement skills in setting and carrying out a geomorphological survey and in the elaboration of the geomorphological mapping will also be verified.
Written test: Written essay and geomorphological map realized during daily field trips. All the geomorphological elements surveyed during the field activities must be mapped and described according to the appropriate legends and methodology acquired during the course, demonstrating the ability of applying knowledge and understanding.
