Objectives
Contents The course is set to make students to be acquainted with basic notions of the molecular, structural, and functional changes in primary neurological diseases. It is also set to provide a practical "hands-on" experience on neuroscience topics that strongly impact clinical psychology. The course takes advantage of recent scientific papers on key neurobiological and neuropathological topics. The course will offer a critical and up-to-date overview of the state-of-the-art of basic and clinical neuroscience topics with a focus on recent developments in the field of neurodegenerative conditions.
Extended Syllabus Course outline
Week 1: Basic principles of neurotransmission and Nervous System functioning
Week 2: Neuroimaging part 1
Week 3: Neuroimaging part 2
Week 4: Molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration) – Lecture on the key hypothesis on neurodegenerative processes.
Week 5: Contribution of excitotoxicity in neurodegenerative settings – Lecture on excitotoxicity as the ubiquitous mechanism of neurodegeneration in diseases of the Central Nervous System.
Week 6: Overview on the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsies.
Week 7: Parkinson's disease: physiopathology, clinical manifestations, and cognitive outcomes – Lecture on the primary forms of synucleinopathies, with a focus on Parkinson's disease
Week 8: Cerebrovascular diseases
Week 9: Artificial intelligence applied to neurological diseases 1
Week 10: Artificial intelligence applied to neurological diseases 2
Each class consists in a 3-hour lecture with the possibility for students to make questions and/or discuss topics of interest. A 1-hour ed discussion on the literature related to the topics of any given lecture will follow the 3-hour of formal teaching.

Teaching Methods According to the educational calendar, the teaching is structured in 30 hours of formal teaching, divided into 10 lessons of 3 hours each. Formal teaching will be supported by the projection of slides made in PowerPoint by the teacher and videoclips related to the course topics set to facilitate understanding of neurobiological processes. If necessary, the lectures could be associated with online teaching through platforms such as Teams, Moodle, etc.
A 1-hour ed discussion on the literature related to the topics of any given lecture will follow the 3-hour of formal teaching.
Attendance is not mandatory.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The final test will be performed at the end of the course. Attendance is strongly encouraged. The student will be assessed by a written test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. The questions will be based on notions contained in the chapters from 1-20 and 59-63 of the recommended textbook (Principles of Neural Science) and on the topic of the lectures. The candidate will have to correctly answer at least 11 out of 20 questions to pass the written test. The written test will be followed by an oral exam.
