Objectives
Contents The specific topics of the course are the following:
1. Measurement in psychology: reliability and validity, the classic model of reliability (educational objectives 1 and 2);
2. Variables (educational objectives 2 and 3)
3. Scales of measurement;
4. Frequencies and their distributions (educational objectives 2 and 3);
5. Tables and graphs (educational objectives 2 and 3);
6. Measures of central tendency: mean, mode and median (educational objectives 2 and 3);
7. Measures of dispersion: standard deviation and variance (educational objectives 2 and 3);
8. Measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles (educational objectives 2 and 3);
9. Standardization (educational objectives 2 and 3);
10. Relationships between variables: measures of correlation and simple regression (educational objectives 2 and 3).
Teaching concerns the theoretical understanding (educational objective 1 and 2), the practical ability to apply the acquired knowledge in executing exercises (educational objectives 2 and 3), and the interactive discussion of the exercises in the classes (educational objective 4).
Extended Syllabus The topics that will be treated are the following:
1. Measurements in psychology: reliability and validity, the classic model of reliability (educational objectives 1 and 2);
2. Variables (educational objectives 2 and 3);
3. Scales of measurement;
4. Frequencies and their distributions (educational objectives 2 and 3);
5. Tables and graphs (educational objectives 2 and 3);
6. Measures of central tendency: mean, mode and median (educational objectives 2 and 3);
7. Measures of dispersion: standard deviation and variance (educational objectives 2 and 3);
8. Measures of position: quartiles, deciles and percentiles (educational objectives 2 and 3);
9. Standardization (educational objectives 2 and 3);
10. Relationships between variables: measures of correlation and simple regression (educational objectives 2 and 3).
Teaching concerns the theoretical understanding (educational objectives 1 and 2), the practical ability to apply the acquired knowledge in executing exercises (educational objectives 2 and 3), and the interactive discussion of the exercises in the classes (educational objective 4).
These topics will be transmitted to the students to obtain an in-depth theoretical understanding of measurements in psychology. Moreover, students need to develop an adequate autonomy in the practical application of this knowledge to correctly deal with problems of quantification and quantitative data processing in psychology.
Recommended Bibliography Balsamo, M. (2017). Elementi di Psicometria, McGraw-Hill Education. – The book is sold in combination with an access code to Connect, an online platform for exercises.
Chapters 12 e 13 are excluded from this course, but will be treated during the EPG of Psychometrics II.
Teaching Methods Classes in the lecture hall; exercises; simulations.
The classes are organized in 64 hours of frontal teaching, subdivided in 2 classes of 3 hours a week, based on the academic schedule.
During the classes, the professor will teach the themes both at the theoretical and at the practical level with exercises that foresee a strong interactive component between teacher and students.
Moreover, the course will make use of CONNECT, an online platform for individual exercising at theoretical and practical levels. The personal access code of the platform will be provided to the students together with the text book (Elementi di Psicometria, McGraw-Hill Education).
The E-Learning platform offered by UdA (https://elearning.unich.it ) will be regularly used to stimulate interactive teaching, to share teaching materials, and to support the exercises.

Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Type of exam:
written exam
The modality of the examination: The exam consists of a written paper and pencil test with 20 multiple-choice questions and 2 exercises with 5 steps each to execute with the support of a formulary and a calculator (the use of electronic devices is not allowed without exception).
Each question will be associated with four alternative answers, whereas one of these is correct. The choice of each correct answer will lead to the attribution of one point, whereas a wrong answer (or indicating multiple answers or no answer) will lead to the attribution of zero points. A verbal exam is not foreseen.
The topics of the exam reflect those discussed during the classes and present in the course program.
The final vote (max. 30) will consist of the sum of the points attributed to the 20 multiple choice questions (20 points) and to those assigned to the 5 steps of the 2 exercises (10 points).
