Knowledge of the basics of mathematics, geometry, drawing and topography.

Objectives

The course aims to provide theoretical, methodological and technical-instrumental knowledge for the construction of 3D models using active (terrestrial laser scanner, geoslam) and passive (frame camera) sensors from both terrestrial platforms and UAVs- Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

Contents

The course is structured in a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part of the course, the principles of Digital Photogrammetry and Laser Scanner as well as 3D acquisition methods will be covered; in the practical part, activities such as calibrating a camera, (digital) image rectification, building realistic 3D model and managing the point cloud generated by a terrestrial laser scanner will be covered. In particular, the course covers the following topics:
- the photogrammetric process;
- construction of 3D surfaces;
- 3D acquisition platforms;
- 3D modelling by images;
- 3D laser scanning.

Extended Syllabus

The photogrammetric process – Photogrammetric systems and procedures; Mathematical fundamentals; Geometry of the camera as a measuring device; Lenses; Transformation of the images (affine, polynomial); Normal case of stereo photogrammetry; Epipolar geometry; SIFT; geometric acquisition; building dense point cloud (1.5 CFU).
Building 3D surface – TIN, Non Uniform Rational Basis-Splines-NURBS, quadmesh, platonic solids (1 CFU).
Platforms for 3D acquisition – terrestrial (tripod, pole, crane); UAV-Unmanned aerial vehicle (type, flight planning, regulation) (1 CFU – 9 ore).
3D modelling using images – Photogrammetric pipeline; software for 3D reconstruction and modelling (1 CFU)
3D laser scanning – Laser-based systems (Laser triangulation, scanners and trackers); principles of acquisition with terrestrial laser scanner and data processing; Simultaneous Localization and Mapping-SLAM; managment of 3D point cloud (1.5 CFU)
