PLANETARY ANALOGUES FIELD WORK Single discipline educational activity
Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Stratigraphic and Sedimentological Geology
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
Basic geological experience: basic capability in geological survey, sedimentary rocks and processes, analysis of remote sensing data.
Objectives
Contents The course is highly practical consisting in 6 – 7 days of field work on Martian analogues environments in Spain or Morocco. During the field work the student will describe aeolian deposits, the sedimentary structures, the internal and external geometries of the sedimentary bodies, the stratigraphic relationships , sedimentary surfaces, subsurface and related processes. Then, the student will identify the possible similarities and differences with sedimentary bodies on Mars.
Extended Syllabus The course is highly practical consisting od a single period of field work. The field work will be carried on in the Moroccan Sahara. The course will be based on three main activities:
1. Analysis of satellite data (remote sensing) of the selected area of field work
2. Field work in the selected area
3. Writing of a detailed report
Recommended Bibliography As a practical course there are not textbooks. The student will work using a set of papers dealing with the matter of his field work.
Teaching Methods Direct experience of field work. Preliminary analysis of satellite images. Writing scientific report.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Evaluation of the proficiency during field work. A final report.
Contacts/More Information It is an activity on the ground that implies a certain familiarity of working in the field even in a relatively hostile environment
