Objectives
Contents Origin and evolution of the main natural and artificial materials used in the historical heritage. Classification, properties and use of materials in cultural heritage. Analysis of the main physical and chemical mechanisms of the degradation of materials and of the methods used to prevent their deterioration. Diagnostic techniques for the characterization of ancient materials and evaluation of diagnostic results for the recovery and conservation of materials.
Extended Syllabus Origin and evolution of the main materials in use in the historical heritage. Classification, properties and use of materials in cultural heritage. Role of porosity and water in the phenomena of degradation of materials of the built heritage. Types of moisture in the masonry. Physical and chemical mechanisms of material degradation. Diagnostic techniques for the characterization of ancient materials and their transformation products over time. Destructive techniques: XRD, SEM, thermal analysis, porosimetric analysis. Non-destructive techniques: macro photography, thermography, ultrasonic investigation. Evaluation of durability with accelerated aging techniques. Evaluation of diagnostic results for the recovery and conservation of materials. Protective and consolidating materials. Evaluation of the physical, chemical and biological compatibility of the materials with the state of the artifacts. Evaluation criteria for the desgin of recovery intervention.

The final exam evaluation will be expressed in points out of 30 (30/30). The final test consists in a written (based on the open answer to questions)/oral exam concerning the main topics of the course.
