Contents MODULE I: Outlines of the history of Western performing arts: from Ancient world to the century of Enlightenment.
MODULE II: From the generetions of italian “Grande attore” to the european “invention” of Theatre directing.
Extended Syllabus MODULE I (6 CFU): Outlines of the history of Western performing arts: from Ancient world to the century of Enlightenment.
The theatrical events will be analyzed within a complex framework, related to their cultural, social and productive contexts.
The topics are:
1. Theatrical performances in the Athens during the age of Pericles. 2. Actors and buildings of the stage in Rome between the Republic and the Empire. 3. Forms of medieval entertainment. 4. The Renaissance theatrical patronage. 5. The Commedia dell'Arte: geography and protagonists. 6. The “teatro all’italiana” building. 7. Carlo Goldoni and Venetian theater companies.
MODULE II (3CFU): From the generetions of italian “Grande attore” to the european “invention” of Theatre directing.
The topics are: 1. The “teatro d’attore” in the Italian 19th century: from Adelaide Ristori to Eleonora Duse. 2. The european “invention” of the of Theatre directing; 3. The advent of Theatre directing in Italy: Visconti and Strehler.
Teaching organization
Face-to-face lectures: 63 hours. Seminars could also be organized.

Students that are unable to attend the lessons of the second module will complete the study of the volume by R. Alonge.
Teaching Methods Face-to-face lectures: 63 hours (42+21). Seminars could also be organized. The lessons are supported by multimedial instruments, like slides and videos.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral exam with marks out of 30.
The exam consists is an interview whose purpose is to assess both knowledge of contents and the student’s critical and methodological skills. Knowledge of the books listed in the bibliography and clarity of exposition will be ascertained.
