Prerequisites:

A basic knowledge of the geography of Italy, Europe and the Mediterranean is required. Quite useful (yet not mandatory) the knowledge of ancient languages, Latin and Greek.

Objectives

The teaching contributes to the learning objectives of the Course in Letters: it supplies the basic skills for Greek history through the reading of Greek and Latin historiographic and epigraphical sources, with view to future employment in the field of publishing, archiving in institutions and enterprises, advertising/business communications or editorial work, as well as to further study in the field of the humanities.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of the chronology and political institutions of Roman History, including the spread of Roman citizenship, the economic evolution of Roman society and its connection with military expansionism, the making of a Mediterranean empire and its deconstruction in Late Antiquity. Knowledge of the main dynamics of the political, social and economic history of the classical Greek world and their chronological contexts.

INDIPENDENCE OF JUDGEMENT
Students are expected to show the ability to critically and comparatively analyse the contents of the sources and their genesis.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
In historical and critical framing, the students are expected to show skill in supplying clear and exhaustive communication.

Contents

MODULE 1: HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONS OF ANCIENT ROME.
Credits: 6 CFU / 42 hours of class lectures.
Title: "The history of ancient Rome from its origins to Heraclius, between civilitas and barbaritas".
This module concerns more than fifteen centuries (8th cent. BC – 7th cent. AD) of Roman History, from Rome’s origins (legend of Trojan War, dynasty of Alba Longa, Rome’s foundation by Romulus, 753 BC) to the Yarmuk river's battle between the Eastern Roman Emperor Heraclius and the Islamic commander Khalid ibn al-Walid (636 AD).
The lectures will focus on the processes of contrast, interaction and integration between the Roman citizens (cives Romani) and the foreigners, non-citizens (peregrini), and between the inhabitants of the Roman Empire (civilitas) and the external “barbarians” (barbaritas).

MODULO 2: THEMATIC ANALYSIS.
Credits: +3 CFU / 21 hours of class lectures, tot. 9 CFU.
Titolo: “Rome and the barbarians in the age of Marcus Aurelius’ wars”.
This module focuses on the figure of Marcus Aurelius, the so called Emperor-Philosopher (reign 161-180 AD), and the problematic relations between the Roman imperial authority and the barbarian peoples (Germans, Sarmatians) of central and Eastern Europe.

MODULE 1: HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONS OF ANCIENT ROME.
Credits: 6 CFU / 42 hours of class lectures.
Title: "The history of ancient Rome from its origins to Heraclius, between civilitas and barbaritas".
This module concerns more than fifteen centuries (8th cent. BC – 7th cent. AD) of Roman History, from Rome’s origins (legend of Trojan War, dynasty of Alba Longa, Rome’s foundation by Romulus, 753 BC) to the Yarmuk river's battle between the Eastern Roman Emperor Heraclius and the Islamic commander Khalid ibn al-Walid (636 AD).
The module is made of three groups of lectures, focusing on the monarchic and republican age (753-31 BC), on the imperial age (31 BC - 284 AD) and on Late Antiquity (284-636 AD); for each of these ages a selection of literary and epigraphical sources will be provided; the sources will be read, translated and analyzed during the lectures.
The lectures will focus on the processes of contrast, interaction and integration between the Roman citizens (cives Romani) and the foreigners, non-citizens (peregrini), and between the inhabitants of the Roman Empire (civilitas) and the external “barbarians” (barbaritas).

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final assessment consists of a written test and an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
