There are no particular prerequisites.

Objectives

The primary objective of the course is the understanding of the aims and areas of the restoration intervention, with specific attention to the connection between theory and technique.

Contents

The course will devote some lessons to the theory and history of the restoration. During the course, criteria and practices will also be investigated which, with a similar role and scope although distinct, are combined in the restoration project. Finally, a brief analytical-diagnostic excursus will be drawn about the "matter" and the operating modes of the restoration.

1. Definitions and basic terminology. The theoretical foundation of restoration.
2. The archaeological restoration: from excavation to conservation.
3. Restoration and context.
4. Restoration and virtuality.
The restoration technique:
1. The construction site of knowledge: the "direct reading" of the work. A relief for restoration?
2. The construction site of knowledge: chemical-physical analyzes for restoration.
3. Material degradation.
Restoration and conservation of natural and artificial stone materials.

The set of traditional ex cathedra lessons on methodological issues as of a more general nature will be supplemented by visits to construction sites and a workshop.

The verification will take place through a final examination with evaluation.
