Objectives

The students will be able: i) know and choose remote sensing methods and analyzes, methods and geophysical analyzes ii) to perform a field geological survey focused on an territory and on an archaeological site; to understand the genesis and evolution of an archaeological site and its relationships with the evolution of the coeval landscape; iii) to deal with the most common topics and problems of an archaeological excavation; iv) to choose the most appropriate analysis for diagnostic and archaeometric applied to heritage stones, pottery and mortars ; v) to interact with the arcaeologist and researchers involved in the cultural heritage.

Contents

Relations between geology and archeology. Quaternary. The accessory disciplines and methods of prospecting for archeology. Stratigraphy of an anthropogenic domain. Diagnostics and archaeometry.

Extended Syllabus

Relations between geology and archeology. Quaternary chronostratigraphy. The accessory disciplines: geomorphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, pedology and paleosols; soil micromorphology. Palaeoclimatologia. The accessory disciplines: methods of remote sensing and geophysical prospecting for archeology. Chronology: some dating methods. Stratigraphy of an anthropogenic domain: US characters (stratigraphic units); post-depositional changes. Archaeological materials: diagnostics and archaeometry (mineralogical-petrographic characterization and technology) of natural stones, ceramics and mortars. Field and laboratory analysis; critical and statistical analysis of data.

Verification of learning:

The final examination consists in two papers illustrated as PPT by the student and a discussion on the topics covered in class and aims to assess the achievement of the main learning objectives of the course.
