Pre-requisites are not strictly needed, but a basic knowledge of Latin and Medieval History is strongly suggested.

Objectives

The course of Latin Paleography contributes substantially to the training of students in "Beni culturali" and "Lettere", providing the tools to read and understand any written source from Antiquity to the Middle Ages (manuscripts, documents, inscriptions); such competence is crucial in several fields, from history to art-history, archaeology, philology, classical and medieval literature.

Contents

From the 7th-6th century B.C. to the end of the Middle Ages, the Latin script underwent profound changes through the ages and geographical areas in which it was used. The course aims to illustrate the general lines of this historical event, one of the most relevant in Western civilization. Each lesson is followed by exercises conducted on palaeographic tables, aimed at the acquisition of basic reading skills, dating and recognition of the main formal characteristics of each type of writing. During the course, visits to archives or other regional conservation institutions will be organised in order to allow a first direct approach to written sources.

Extended Syllabus

A brief methodological introduction will be followed by the analysis of Latin scripts, from archaic Rome to Late Antiquity (epigraphic Capital, book Capitals, Old and New Roman Cursive, early Minuscule, Uncial, Half-Uncial), the Early Middle Ages (Insular, Merovingic, Visigothic, Beneventan and Northern-Italian scripts) and Central and Late Middle Ages (Caroline, Gothic, Chancery hands, mercantesca). Finally, we'll deal with Humanistic scripts (15th century book and chancery hands).

Frontal lectures, visits to sites of interest, such as archives or historic libraries, seminars aimed at deepening specific topics.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

Oral - results into grade out of thirties. Students will be asked to report on topics covered during the course.

Attending the course regularly is very important in view of the final exam. Students who cannot attend the course are requested to contact the teacher at least two months before the exam.
