APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENCES AND TECHNIQUES I Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Contents The course aims to illustrate the fundamentals of cardiopulmonary bypass by retracing the historical stages of an "idea" that has changed the path of cardiac surgery. The study will then be dedicated to the study of the individual equipment for extracorporeal circulation, the study of the hardware components of the heart lung machine and of the other associated instruments will be then examined, as well as the study of disposable components, with particular reference to the composition of materials and their characteristics ideals. Furthermore, hygiene concepts applied to the method itself and to the operating room in which it is inserted will be addressed.
Extended Syllabus History of Cardiopulmonary Bypass
2. Fluid dynamics and Cardiopulmonary Bypass
3. Medical devices classification and cardiac surgery
4. Heart-Lung Machine
5. Heat cooler
6. Disposable , Equipment , Design, Principles
7. Flowmeters and Settings
8. Medical Gas Exchange
9. Biomaterials and coating
10. Asepsis in the OR focus on Cardiac Surgery

Teaching Methods The course will consist of frontal lectures
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
There are ongoing tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning and teaching processes.
The final exam consists of an oral or written test based on the agreements made between the teachers of the Integrated Course. At the end of the course the student must prove that he / she has mastered the topics and the program carried out. The final verification can be supported in one of the appeals present in the calendar.
The oral or written exam focuses on topics in which the student can demonstrate:
- a sufficient but incomplete basic knowledge (vote 18-22 / 30),
- a discreet knowledge with the ability to clearly illustrate the topics (23-25 / 30),
- good ability to illustrate topics with properties of language and mastery of the subject (26-28 / 30),
- excellent knowledge of the subject moving with ease from one topic to another contextualizing any interconnections and / or differences (28-30 / 30).
Praise is reserved for those who also show particular interest and knowledge of the functional aspects of the professionalizing sector, with high communication skills and independent learning.
Contacts/More Information The student will have to acquire the knowledge related to the instrumental bases of cardiopulmonary bypass. He will have to know in depth the instrumentation and the equipment, not only in the mechanics of operation but also in the type of material. He will have to know the ideal characteristics of each disposable component and the design principles and know the principles of classification of electromedical instruments and medical devices described in the course.
