Objectives

The course aims to introduce the student to the understanding of the mechanisms that underlie evolutionary theories and their development in the light of new knowledge.
The course pays particular attention to the implications of the evolutionary process during embryonic development and in the first years of life.

Evolutionary theories
Species concept.
Population dynamics
from DNA to proteins, the genome and the
mutations. Epigenetics. Embryonic development. EVO-DEVO

Species Concept. Evolutionary theories, Jean Baptiste Lamarck, Charles Darwin.
The origin of the species. Natural selection. Evidence in favor of the theory of evolution. Genetics of the
populations. Modern synthesis. Definition of population, growth curves, biotic potential, capacity
carrier, dependent density factors, independent density factors, competition, reproductive strategies.
Hardy-Weinberg's law. The biological species, reproductive barriers. From DNA to proteins, the genome, the
mutations. Epigenetics. Embryonic development. EVO-DEVO
