Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge of key terms, of periodization and of the problems in the history of philosophy.

Objectives

To know the meaning and development of psychoanalytic "philosophy" in a diachronic and synchronic perspective. To know the themes and the essential terminology of psychoanalysis; understand the meaning of psychoanalytic therapy; analyze and understand some passages taken from the Freudian texts; to evaluate the scope and the limits of the Freudian doctrine, also on the basis of its philosophical, anthropological and sociological implications; problematizing the psychoanalytic theory with respect to the historical-cultural context.

Contents

Freud and the discovery of the unconscious; the relationship between psychoanalysis, philosophy and medicine; the cathartic method; the doctor-patient relationship: Transfert, controtransfert, repression, removal and resistance; the structure of the psyche; first and "second" topical; origin and cure of neurosis; the dream as a way of access to the unconscious; the meaning of libido; the psychopathology of everyday life; the theory of sexuality; Eros and Thanatos; the repetition compulsion; the discomfort of civilization.

Extended Syllabus

The course will focus on the development of Freudian speculation: from studies on hysteria to reflection on society and on the religion of the last Freud. The course will deepen the Freudian methodology and the revolutionary discovery of the unconscious, themed The interpretation of dreams (1899). The new definition of psyche will be described (first topical: CONSCIO, PRECONSCIO, UNCONSCIOUS) and the structural model of the psyche: ES, IO and SUPER-IO. The scope and limits of the theory of child sexuality will be evaluated. With the discovery of Thanatos (Beyond the pleasure principle, 1920), the revision of the monistic theory of the psyche will be accounted for.
