Prerequisites:

The course provides a basic knowledge of brain neuroanatomy, some descriptive statistics concepts are also used.

Objectives

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of the main neurodevelopmental disorders. The student must therefore acquire the fundamental notions on the functioning of specific cognitive structures, starting from the biological basis up to the neurocognitivist modeling. The updated procedures for the correct nosographic framework and the recommended path for an assessment of the intellectual functioning profile, learning and emotional-motivational will be shown. The course provides the knowledge bases for future inclusion in the multidisciplinary team that operates in the sector of assessment and intervention on childhood and adolescence of childhood neuropsychiatry, but also as an employment outlet in the freelance profession. The course also presents itself as the necessary basis for a future post-graduate second level master's degree in the field of learning disorders.

Contents

1) Definitions, diagnostic criteria and classifications.
2) biological basis of dyslexia and dyscalculia
3) developmental dyslexia
4) the difficulties and disturbances of the calculation
5) writing disorders: dysgraphia, dysorthography and difficulty of written expression
6) problems in understanding the text
7) disturbances of mathematical reasoning and problem solving
8) specific language disorders, learning difficulties of the foreign language and the case of students with DSA
9) non-verbal disturbance
10) intellectual disabilities and limit intellectual functioning
11) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
12) emotional-motivational aspects that accompany learning difficulties.

Teaching Methods

The course includes 48 hours of frontal teaching (or alternatively via online platform), divided into lessons of 4 consecutive hours, for 12 weeks, according to the academic calendar. 102 hours of individual study follow. Pdf teaching materials are provided and available in the e-learning section.
Attendance is optional, recommended, the final exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The final exam consists of 21 multiple choice questions with 4 alternative answers. The contents of the questions are taken from the chapters of the textbook (excluding chapter 13), any insights provided during the lessons will not be included in the verification, so as not to penalize non-attending students. Oral supplemental exams are not allowed.

An updated assessment is required (no more than three years old at the time of enrollment).
