Objectives

1- To know and recognize the structure of human tissues, their location in the various organs, to correlate the morphological features to the function, emphasizing the differentiation continuity from the stem cell to the differentiated tissue.
2- To facilitate the student, through the practical approach, the understanding of the mechanisms inherent to histology and functional histology of human tissues.
3- To establish the basis for understanding the alterations of tissue organization and the morpho-functional implications that underlie the different pathologies and their recognition.
4- To acquire mastery in the observation of the morpho-functional characteristics peculiar to cells and tissues.
5- To introduce the methods of study in Histology and in particular the Optical and Electron Microscope and sample preparation.
6- To build a solid foundation in histology, so that the medical student can acquire greater autonomy in the deepening of knowledge and in building his preparation in the future and a critical sense approaching other related disciplines.

Contents

Morpho-functional organization of various cell types and extra-cellular components which constitute human organism tissues, of their stem precursors, of cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as of histogenesis, homeostatic mechanisms, renewal, repair and tissue regeneration and tissue effects of physical and sports activity.

Extended Syllabus

Three-dimensional organization of cell populations: tissues, organs, apparatuses. Tissues renewal. Stem cells and kinetics of cell populations.
Epithelial tissues: general morphological and functional characteristics and classification; cell surface specializations and polarity; basal membrane.
Coating epithelia: coating epithelia structure and localization.
Glandular epithelia: morpho-functional classification of the glands; histological organization and localization of the exocrine and endocrine glands; methods and types of secretion.
Connective tissues: general morphological and functional characteristics and classification.
Connective tissues properly called: specialized cells and extracellular matrix; components of the amorphous substance: glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans and glycoproteins; collagen, elastic, reticular fibers; biosynthesis and organization of extracellular components; variety of connective tissues properly called and relative location.
Adipose tissue.
Cartilaginous tissue: morphological and functional characteristics; specialized cells and cartilaginous matrix; cartilage types; cartilage histogenesis; perichondrium.
Bone tissue: morphological and functional characteristics; specialized cells and bone matrix; bone lamellae and lamellar systems; compact and spongy bone; periosteum and endosteum; ossification; growth and remodeling of the bone; metabolic functions of the bone.
Blood: plasma; red blood cells; white blood cells; platelets.
Myeloid tissue: hematopoiesis.
Lymphoid system: immunocompetent cells; structure of the lymphoid tissue; mentions on the structure of the lymphoid organs.
Muscle tissues: general morphological and functional characteristics and classification.
Skeletal muscle tissue: structural and ultrastructural organization; molecular bases of muscle contraction; contraction control; histophysiology of skeletal muscle.
Cardiac muscle tissue: structural and ultrastructural organization.

Teaching Methods

Indicated in the description of the Integrated Course
Lectures, interactive lectures and thematic seminars.
Lectures will include traditional lectures and using light microscope as well, observing histological preparations in the classroom, thanks to the use of a microscope equipped with a digital camera and an image acquisition and video projection system. All the histological preparations are of human origin. The course will include a gradual learning, starting from the simple observation of the morphological characteristics, passing through the explanation of the morpho-functional implications and coming then to the reading and the analysis of the peculiarities of a tissue, as an ideal "material" to carry out one or more functions . The last lectures, taking advantage of the student preparation reached, will be interactive lessons in which the students themselves will "read" the slide and will illustrate the relative histological evaluation criteria and the characteristics of the tissues under examination, correlating MORPHOLOGY and FUNCTION.
