Objectives

1. learn to use optical microscopy
2. learn to identify histological specimens from human tissues and organs.

Contents

Observation and analysis of human histological specimens by means of optical microscopy. Identification of distinct cytotypes and recognition of normal tissue morphology and their location in the different organs of the human body.

Extended Syllabus

- Epithelial Tissue: covering epithelial tissue, glandular epithelium (exocrine, endocrine).
- Connective Tissue: Proper Connective Tissue, Adipose Tissue, Support Connective Tissue (Cartilage and Bone; intramembranous and endochondral ossification), Blood and haemopoiesis.; lymphoid tissue and organs.
- Muscle Tissue: striated muscular tissue (Skeletal and Cardiac), Smooth muscular tissue.

Teaching Methods

Practical training will be carried out in Aula Microscopi, equipped with 24 microscopes. Students will be divided into groups to attend their weekly turn (1 h and 30 min)
Projection (by means of a Teaching microscope) of several prototypes of histological specimens will be followed by student-driven autonomous recognition.
