Objectives

-Give a general picture of the Pre-Roman Italy
- give the methodological background for the research in the field of pre-roman Italy
- give the main bases to understand the further historical steps of Italy and the Mediterranean basin.

Contents

Ancient Italy in the Iron Age and the general picture of peoples and civilizations, forms of settlings and territorial organization. Issues of pre-colonization. The phsenomenon of the Emporia, some example. Phases and provenance of the Greek Colonization in the Mediteranean context. Relationship between apoikia and metropolis. Forms and mechanisms of the Hellenization of towns and and territory. Houses, sanctuaries and necropoleis in pre-roman Italy. The Etruscan context and its interactions and influences.The peoples of ancient Italy: phenomena of ibridization in Southern Italy. The tribes and the peoples of Central Italy. The context of norther Italy in the first millennium BC.

Extended Syllabus

The course will be organised in three different sections:
-A first part, of 3 cfu, will be dedicated to the Greek Colonization and to the Greek frequentation of the Mediterranean basin. The main topics will include: mythology, literature and archaeology. Forms and issues of the colonization: both historical, geographical and political. Relationships between colonies and founders. Greeks and Italic peoples in southern Italy. Chora and colony. Distribution of kleroi, organization of territories and urban contexts.
- A second part, of 3 cfu, will be dedicated to the study of the Etruscans. From Villanovan to Etruscans. Theories about provenance and autochthony. The picture of the settlements. Relationship between town and territory. The necropoleis: analysis and structures. The Etruscan Painting. Etruscans in Campania and Etruscans in Padania. Relationship with Greeks and Italics. Productions of Etrusco-Corintian pottery.
- A third section, of 3cfu, will be dedicated to the Peoples of Pre-Roman Italy. Peoples and tribes of Southern Italy and relationship with the Greeks. Forms of Cultural Hybridization and coexistence. The Cultures and tribes of Central Italy: Amnites, Sabelians/SAfines, Latium and Piceni. The tribes and peoples of northern Italy: Celts, Ligures, Raeti and Veneti and relationship with Etruria Padana.
The lectures will be completed with indications of historical geography, analysis of the phaenomenon of the Emporia, of the relationship between towns and cemeteries in different contexts of Pre-Roman Italy.
