Objectives
Contents The course focuses on the analysis of the interactions between climatic characteristics and meteorological phenomena and territory in terms of geomorphological processes, hazards and related risks. In particular, the impacts of extreme meteorological events on the landscape on geomorphological hazards, on anthropic activities (urban areas, structures and infrastructures) are analyzed. The tools of meteoclimatic analysis are applied to the analysis of the environment and the interactions between man and landscape.
Extended Syllabus Introduction. Knowledge of the fields of application of climatology and meteorology. Knowledge of the main geomorphological hazards, and related risks, relating to the different types of environments and for the proper management of the environment.
Concepts of danger, vulnerability and risk in relation to geomorphological processes.
The atmosphere (composition, balance, radiation, temperature distribution, circulation)
Precipitation: formation, measurement methods, meteoric inflow into a catchment area, rainfall regimes, extreme events (intensity, duration, distribution, return times).
Temperature: measurement methods, connection with intense meteoric events (snowfalls, convective rains, etc.).
Hints of river gomorphology: Hydrographic basin, types of flow, morphometry, time of corrosion. Elements of geomorphological analysis of the hydrographic network.
Hydrological balances.
Surface outflows: level and flow measurements, hydrometers, velocity measurements, flow calculation, hydrogram and flood hydrogram analysis. The propagation of floods.

Methods of Provision
Teaching Methods The course is based on lectures, laboratory activities, field excursions and seminars. Specific cases of intense meteoric events are analyzed. The meteoclimatic data and the related geomorphological effects in different types of environments (coastal, fluvial, gravitational, karst, snow and glacial) are analyzed.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Exam consisting of written and oral tests.
Oral test: it is focused on verifying the acquisition of the methods of metoclimatic analysis applied to the assessment of hydrogeological hazard and risk.
Written test:
Essay on the meteoclimatic analysis of an heavy meteorological event discussed with the teacher and the related geomorphological effects; the analysis is aimed at assessing hydrogeological risks; it must describe the geomorphological characteristics of the chosen area, the related geomorphological hazards, and the general climatic and meteorological characteristics in relation to intense events; it includes the creation of geomorphological and thematic maps.
The final grade on /30. The oral test is correspond to 30% and the written essay is 70% of the final grade.
To pass the exam it is necessary to have a minimum grade of 18/30.
Contacts/More Information Two field excursions are planned
Student reception:
- at the teacher's office at the scheduled times or by appointment via email.
