Hours of classroom activity:
Objectives
Contents This module of the laboratory medicine course aims at providing the student with a knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying development and progression of pathology in the oral cavity, with particular attention at the carcinogenesis of this anatomic site.
Specific notions will be provided about the technologies employed for classification and cytology/histology-based diagnosis. Additional notions will be provided, from the experimental clinical trial currently ongoing, to innovative therapeutic strategies under investigation in vitro as well as in pre-clinical models.
Extended Syllabus Carcinogenesis: general key concepts. Molecular alterations of the key genes involved in the pathogenetic processes of cancerogenesis.
Staging, incidence, prognosis, bone invasion, lymph node and distant metastasis.
Molecular mechanisms of the pathobiology of Head and Neck and of Oral Cancers
Molecular Signaling in Oral Cancer Invasion
and Metastasis.
Biomarkers Derived from Key Processes
of Carcinogenesis and their use in the cytology/histology-based technologies for early diagnosis and cancer staging
Role of HPV in the development of the Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Role of EBV in the development of the Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Nasopharynx
Epigenetic Changes and Epigenetic Targets in Head and Neck Cancers
Mechanisms involved in the invasion and metastasis of the Head and Neck Cancers: molecular signaling, tumor-stroma interactions, cancer stem cells
Animal models of the oral carcinogenesis
Recommended Bibliography Lesson notes, international literature (Medline)
Teaching Methods Traditional lessons, integrated with “journal club” sessions for discussion of the most important scientific papers in this field.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Oral examination
Verification of learning by interview with at least 3 questions concerning the course topics.
Each answer will be evaluated using a score from 1 to 10, and the sum of the scores will determine the overall vote
