Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
The student must have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology.
Objectives
Contents The course includes two sections:
1) General pharmacology: this section describes the principles that underlie the human-drug interactions and that in turn are divided into two chapters, one related to Pharmacokinetics (the effects that the body has on drugs) and the other one on Pharmacodynamics (the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the therapeutic, unwanted and toxic effects of drugs).
2) Special Pharmacology and therapy: this section describes the characteristics of the single classes of drugs
Extended Syllabus Introduction to Pharmacology, definition of active drugs
Pharmacokinetic elements: main routes of drug administration (outline of the main pharmaceutical forms and the correct administration of drugs); absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs; bioavailability; therapeutic range; plasma half-life; therapeutic index.
Elements of Pharmacodynamics: drug-receptor interactions; main receptor classes; main signal transduction pathways; receptor agonists and antagonists; definition of power and maximum efficacy of a drug.
Special pharmacology:
• Drugs acting on the central nervous system (anxiolytics, hypnotics and sedatives, antidepressants, drugs for Parkinson's disease, antiepileptics);
• Drugs active on the peripheral nervous system (adrenergic agonists and antagonists, cholinergic agonists and antagonists)
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); glucocorticoids; centrally acting analgesic drugs (morphine)
• Infection Pharmacology: Antibacterial Chemotherapy [Classification of Antimicrobial Drugs. Factors that determine the susceptibility and resistance of microorganisms to the most common antimicrobial drugs (Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Macrolides, Fluoroquinolones)]. Antivirals
• Hormonal contraceptive methods
Recommended Bibliography The recommended texts are:
"Le basi della Farmacologia"3rd edition, Zanichelli (Karen Whalen)
"Farmacologia": Rang HP, Dale MM, Ritter JM FARMACOLOGIA, Casa Editrice Ambrosiana;
"Farmacologia generale e molecolare". F. Clementi e G. Fumagalli. Editore:UTET
Any additional materials will be made available by the teacher to supplement the recommended texts
Teaching Methods The teaching is divided into lectures whose purpose is to transmit concepts, information and schemes.
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The student must register for the examination session on Esse3. The level of learning related to the module of Pharmacology takes place in oral form.
The exam mode and the evaluation method are indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the lessons
