EXPLORATION PLAY ANALOGUES Course Sheet Academic Year of enrolment:
Disciplinary Sector:
Stratigraphic and Sedimentological Geology
Professor and Collaborators:
Hours of classroom activity:
Prerequisites:
Geological concepts related to the main geodynamic processes, from the rifting to the post-collisional phase; knowledge of the classifications of carbonate rocks. Ability to read geological maps and construction of geological cross sections.
Objectives
Contents 1. Techniques of geological and stratigraphic analysis on a regional scale: the megasequence approach;
2. Elements of regional geology and paleogeography of the Mediterranean;
3. Main depositional and sedimentological characteristics of the Mediterranean carbonate systems.
4. The main elements of the petroleum system and the concept of play;
6. Examples of carbonate proven plays in the Mediterranean and outcrops analogues.
7. Field work on an exposed Cretaceous carbonate reservoir analogue
Extended Syllabus 1. Techniques of geological and stratigraphic analysis on a regional scale: the megasequence approach. Description of the basic concepts of megasequence analysis. Definition of megasequence and megasequence boundary. Erect a basin-scale megasequence chronostratigraphic framework. Relationship between megasequences and geodynamic processes, methods for the recognition of megasequences from subsurface and outcrop data; sedimentary expression of megasequence boundaries.
2. Elements of regional geology and paleogeography of the Mediterranean; Illustration of the geological evolution, sedimentary and stratigraphic characteristics of Mediterranean basins; sedimentary expression of megasequence boundaries associated with the main geodynamic events.
3. Main depositional and sedimentological characteristics of the Mediterranean carbonate systems. Types of platforms and their characteristics, such as gross depositional environment, carbonate factories, margin geometries, inception and demise modes of carbonate platforms.
4. The main elements of the petroleum system and the play concept; Source, reservoir, seal and trap.
6. Examples of carbonate proven plays in the Mediterranean and surface analogues. Analysis of carbonate plays with reservoirs located at the top of the platform (karst and margin settings) and along the slope and in the basin.
7. Field work on an exposed analogue of a Cretaceous carbonate reservoir. The field work takes place in Greece, on Mount Parnassus, where it is possible to observe a well-preserved carbonate system from the platform interior to the slope-basin. The purpose of the field work is the application of the concepts exposed during the course to an exposed analogue, through the subdivision of the sedimentary record into megasequences, the identification of the potential elements of the petroleum system and the evaluation of the possible reservoirs in the different sedimentary environments.
Recommended Bibliography Slides and selection of literature material
Teaching Methods Lectures, exercises and field work
Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
The exam consists of an oral test and the realization of a report based on the group work carried out during the field work.
Contacts/More Information Reception hours: Thursday, 11.00 - 13.00. At the request of the students it is possible to organize meetings with the teacher for the in-depth study of the topics covered during the course. These meetings may be held during reception hours or also through other channels (e.g. email or other).
