"Nikolaj Karamzin and Russian Sentimentalism"
The purpose of the course is to present the important literary movement that gained ground in Russia from the end of the 18th-century to the beginning of 19th-century. By reflecting on Western patterns and models Russian Sentimentalism opened the way for “Golden Age” of poetry in the first half of 19-th-century, and for the great Russian novel in the second half.
Extended Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS
The programme is structured in three modules.
Module A (3CFU): Russian Sentimentalism (end of the 18th-Century - beginning of 19-th-Century). How the paradigm of Western “sensibility” was adapted to Russian cultural traditions and initiated new Russian literary forms of expression. The reception of Diderot, Rousseau, Sterne in Russia. The critical debate on the periodization of Russian sentimentalist literature.
Module B (4CFU): The most important literary works of Russian Sentimentalism. In-depth (slow) reading in Russian of poetry and short tales by N. M. Karamzin.
Module C (3CFU): “Pis’ma russkogo putešestvennika”: Karamzin abroad between truth and invention. The creation of Russian travel literature.

The course includes the following works of N. M. Karamzin: a selection of poems; povesti “Bednaja Liza”, “Natal’ja, bojarskaja doč’”; “Pis’ma russkogo putešestvennika”, (izd. podgotovili Ju.M.Lotman, N.A.Marchenko, B.A.Uspenskij), Leningrad,1984. Authors to be studied include A.N. Radiščev, whose “Putešestvie iz Peterburga v Moskvu” is in part inspired by Sterne’s “A Sentimental Journey” such as Karamzin’s “Pis’ma russkogo putešestvennika”.
