Adequate ability to represent the Architecture and to develop related technical drawings (plans, elevations, sections) at the various scales (1:200; 1:100; 1:50)

Objectives

The objectives aim to:
- provide an interdisciplinary reference framework (references chemical-physical) for the understanding of the peculiarities of the main ones building materials (knowledge);
- acquire a critical analysis of the production processes of materials and components (skills);
- configure adequate reading, analysis and definition skills design of building elements making up the building organism (competence).

Contents

the course aims to develop a study path aimed at the knowledge of the methodologies and tools of technological culture of project, through the examination of the physical elements and of the design and operational practices that allow the passage from simple drawing to the concrete and coherent formulation of the architectural project, and of the subsequent its realization.

To this end, the student will be asked to deal with both the physical aspects (building materials and products, construction elements and related subsystems), and with the methodological and operational aspects aimed at checking and verifying the coherence of the design documents with the technical-performance contents required to the building elements.

Extended Syllabus

The course aims to provide the student with basic knowledge regarding:
- the technical characteristics of the materials and construction elements and their evolution over time
- the rules of art for the correct use of building materials and products in the construction of architectural artefacts
- the relationships of coherence between the use of materials and their processing techniques, in order to guarantee the constructive, performance and figurative coherence of the individual construction elements with respect to the functional and linguistic demands of the architectural project
- the role played by individual materials, functional layers, and related construction procedures in the design, construction,
and management of technical elements and more generally of building products.
At the end of the course the student must be able to:
knowing how to read, break down and classify a building system, based on UNI 8290 and subsequent amendments;
Know how to read the construction solutions adopted in the architectural artefact under study, carried out on the basis of a significant portion of the structure-cladding system chosen on the recommendation of the teacher, and aimed at describing the technical elements present in the portion of the building examined, specifying their role (what it is and what it is used for), the construction rules and technological compatibility (how to do it), the characteristics of the materials used (what it is made of).
From reading the following should emerge:
- the recognition of individual construction elements;
- the identification of specific services associated with these;
- the description of the materials and elements used and their main mechanical, physical-technical and environmental characteristics (technical data sheets).

Teaching Methods

The course will be organized into two teaching modules:
a first theoretical module consisting of a cycle of ex-cathedra lessons on materials and construction techniques;
a second application module of the knowledge acquired in the first module, developed through the reading and critical analysis of examples of contemporary architecture selected in agreement with the teacher, to develop an in-depth analysis of the construction solutions, the technical elements and the materials that distinguish them, also in reference to products available on the market.
Specific in-depth seminars may be held during the second teaching module.
The revisions will be carried out mainly in a collegial manner in order to share the reflections and indications provided by the teacher among all the students.

Evaluation methods

Verification of learning:

The evaluation of the learning level acquired by the student throughout the training course will be carried out on the basis of:
- presence during theoretical lessons and practical activities;
- the theoretical knowledge acquired during the cycle of lessons, verified through an intermediate oral test (partial verification) which will take place at the end of the theoretical lessons and before the start of the practical activities;
- the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the reading and interpretation of the technological contents of the Architecture project, verified through the performance of collegial exercise activities.
Each group, made up of a maximum of 3 students, will be able to develop the exam papers collectively, with the exception of the construction details (on a 1:20/1:10 scale) whose elaboration must be individual, and in a number corresponding to the number of members of the group examined.
The completion of the year's theme is a necessary but not sufficient condition for taking the exams, as it does not replace the complex of activities held during the course.
For the purposes of the exam, each group must present the following documents, both digitally and on paper:
- n°1 PDF Book (minimum resolution 300 dpi) in a format to be defined of the written-graphic documents produced during the carrying out of the exercise activities indicated in phases 1 and 2 ();
- n° 1 PDF file (minimum resolution 300 dpi) in A4 format containing the technical data sheets relating to the materials/products identified during the exercise activities, equipped with an initial index divided into subsystems (structures, closures, partitions, systems). The technical data sheets must at least report the mechanical, physical, thermal and environmental characteristics of the materials used, as well as the installation methods suggested by the manufacturer.

The course provides for compulsory participation, with a minimum attendance of 70% of each student in lectures and exercises.
The collective exercises activities can be developed in groups.
Each group can have a maximum of three members.
