Objectives

Educational goals
- Study energy as a factor of production and development.
- Show the international and national picture of the situation of
energy resources.
- Provide knowledge on economic indices based on energy consumption in order to make comparisons between economic systems, industrial sectors and individual industries.
- Emphasize the professional function of the Energy Manager.
Expected learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
Because the current civilization is characterized by enormous progress
made in the scientific and technological field, at the end of the course the
students will have the knowledge tools to:
explain the economic facts related to energy sources, starting from an examination of the technical aspects;
- analyze the environmental effects of energy production.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- apply knowledge to the identification of the main critical issues relating to the forms of energy currently used and potentially usable.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course students will have acquired the following skills
communicative:
- know how to use economic language appropriately
- present and rigorously discuss the technical-economic relationships relating to the topics studied

Contents

The course will be carried out in an interdisciplinary way trying to make
the facts and technical aspects of energy sources understandable in
connection with the economic aspects of this sector. In fact if from a side
it is quite easy to find documents on the technical aspects of energy,
energy sources and "machines", or find
manuals and discussions concerning exclusively economic aspects
of energy, on the other hand it is more difficult to find literature that
examines the technical aspects of energy sources to explain
economic facts connected to them. This is particularly felt for the analysis
of the environmental effects of energy production. Since the current
civilization stands out for the enormous progress made in the scientific
and technological field, economic connoisseurs will be able to perform
their functions better if they take into account the technical content of
the problems cheap. The various topics will be treated in such a way as to
contain a historical part, a technical part with the most important
production cycles energy and an economic-commercial part.

Part I
- Energy in general. Energy sources. Classification and typology. There
energy measurement. Returns. Thermoeconomics. Historical aspects of the
engines and their technical evolution.
- Resources and reserves. World energy supply situation.
energy demand. Energy intensity and the causes of changes in energy demand. The world, European and Italian energy balance.
Part II
- Fossil fuels: general information, historical aspects, resources and reserves,
chemical energy.
- Oil. Historical aspects. Search and extraction. Production and
international trading. Oil refining cycle. Products
oil products: evolution of demand. Industry organization
oil. The oil companies. Evolution of oil contracts.
- Coal: historical aspects. Classification of coals.
Coal transformation processes. Production and uses
International coal trade.
- Natural gas: technical aspects. Jobs. Reserves, production, transport, trade. Italian situation.
- Nuclear energy: historical aspects. Nuclear fuel cycle
Enrichment processes: technical and economic aspects. Location of nuclear power plants and environment. Operation and characteristics of nuclear power plants: types of reactors. Uranium market and evolution of contracts for enrichment services. The confinement of radioactive waste: technical aspects and microeconomic and macroeconomic factors that condition its cost-effectiveness.
Part III
- Renewable energy sources: geothermal, wind, solar, biomass,
mini hydraulics. Technical and economic aspects.
- Electricity: historical and technical aspects. Hydroelectric energy
thermoelectricity: technical and economic comparisons. The cost of production
electricity from various primary sources. Energy market
electricity and international trade. Load diagram. Rates
- Energy saving: rational use of energy and energy management.
Application cases. Energy management.
- The risks in the production of energy: for man and for the environment
Comparisons between different sources. Environmental impact assessment.

Teaching Methods

The course is divided into 72 hours of frontal teaching. The lessons are conducted by the teacher and include a strong interactive component with the students. Attendance is optional, but
recommended.

LEARNING VERIFICATION METHODS
The verification of the students' preparation will take place through a
interview (oral exam), consisting of 3-4 questions concerning the
topics to be taught. The ability to re-elaborate reference material, communication skills and the maturity to develop critical thinking will also be tested.
The evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths.
