Learning Objectives
The teaching contributes to achievement of the learning objectives of the Course in Humanities, supplying the basic skills of philological interpretation of texts, with examples based on mediaeval and humanistic texts. This in view of both further study for a master’s in the humanities field or possible employment opportunities in publishing, archiving with institutions/companies, advertising and business communications or editorial work.

Skills
At the end of the course the student should be able to illustrate the meaning of the history of the tradition of the text; know the theoretical rules of the main methods of editing; be familiar with the problems of language, of attribution and authenticity, of research of sources and of historical-cultural setting. The student will also have learnt, including through practical exercises, to use the main tools of the sector (bibliographies, lexicons, concordances, biographical repertoires etc.); the student must be capable of interpreting a critical edition.

Independence of judgement
The student must understand the text by setting it within its historical-cultural coordinates, and must then arrive at an individual interpretation and general assessment.

Communications skills
The student must be able to use the technical language of philology.
