Objectives

The competence in knowing the western philosophy of modern age, as well as Kant philosophy, is part of the educational path of studies and gives essential skills to start a career as a scholar in philosophical research or as a teacher in high educational institutions.
At the end of the course the students will be able to situate the main authors of modern age philosophy in its chronology and to have basic elements to a proper comprehension of philosophical texts.

Contents

Title: Kant and modern Philosophy.
The course provides a general explanation of the western philosophy and its developments from the 17. to the 18. Century.
In addition, the course gives a presentation of one of the most important work of modern philosophy, such as is the “Prolegomena to any future metaphysics” by I. Kant. This Work – more than other Kant's Works – is an extraordinary repertory of modern Philosophy concepts. In the Prolegomena Kant discusses their theoretical presuppositions and gives a new elucidation of them.

Extended Syllabus

- Kants transcendental aesthetics and the problem of knowledge in modern philosophy;
- Foundation of causality between Hume and Kant;
- Kant and the problem of Metaphysics as a science;
- Kant's new rational psychology;
- Overview of the kantian System of philosophy.

Recommended Bibliography

The students should read these texts entirely.

Verification of learning:

Examination through questioning conversation. The students should answer some questions about the course related texts. They have to demonstrate a good knowledge of the texts. Furthermore they have to show a full comprehension of the ideas of modern philosophy, which are the course main issue, giving an exposition of them related to the modern philosophy and its authors. Moreover every student should peruse and comment a passage of the classical text included in the course program. The vote will be assigned according a thirtieth range.
