Contents From the comedies of Goldoni to Manzoni’s Promessi sposi
Since the conception of his Fermo e Lucia down to I promessi sposi, Manzoni had eighteenth-century comedy and notably Goldoni’s plays as one of his main sources of inspiration. Yet a preference for a comparison with the French (Molière) and English (Shakespeare’s tragedies) theatre, and more recently with Beaumarchais and Da Ponte, has somewhat obscured the importance of Goldoni, whose influence on Manzoni and more generally eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Italian prose writing is paramount, even though not always easy to unravel owing to transcodifications of forms and between genres.
Lectures will focus on Goldoni’s compositional technique and the dramatic structure of his plays, as well as the influence they exercised over Manzoni’s narrative art.

Evaluation methods Verification of learning:
Students will take an oral exam, conversing on the topics dealt with in class and listed in this syllabus. They will be asked 6-7 questions meant to assess their ability to express themselves correctly, and their knowledge of the historical context, the socio-cultural issues, as well as the stylistic and thematic peculiarities of the authors’ works. Their ability to understand and conduct a critical analysis of the literary texts listed in this syllabus will be also assessed.
The final score will be from 0 to 30. Students will pass the exam with a sufficient score if they show a basic knowledge of the topics; they will get an excellent score if they show a very good knowledge of the topics and an ability to develop an in-depth analysis and a critical discourse on them.
